Impairment is any condition that takes a fire protection system out of service, planned or otherwise. A closed control valve, a panel in trouble, a drained dry system, or a suppression cylinder removed for recharge all qualify. Code requires a documented impairment procedure, which at minimum means notifying the monitoring company and the AHJ, posting impairment tags, and establishing a fire watch when the impairment exceeds the allowed duration.
